Poland has roughly 38 million people and a nominal GDP near 810 billion USD, making it the EU's sixth-largest economy and one of its fastest-growing since 2004 accession. A NATO member since 1999 and EU member since 2004, Poland retains the złoty rather than the euro, and the Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW) is Central and Eastern Europe's largest bourse. Since 2022 it has been Ukraine's principal rear-area logistics hub and the EU's largest absorber of Ukrainian refugees, with defence spending above 4 percent of GDP, among NATO's highest. Polish is official, and the country is among the EU's most ethnically and religiously homogeneous, with about 97 percent ethnic Poles and a strong Catholic majority.
