How do I calculate someone's age?

Subtract their date of birth from today's date — but do it in calendar units, not just by dividing days. Count whole years first (the number of birthdays they've had), then take the remainder and break it into months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Because months are 28-31 days and leap years exist, simple division gives you the wrong answer; this calculator uses date-fns to handle those edge cases the way humans actually count birthdays.

Does this work across time zones?

Yes — the elapsed time between two moments is the same number of seconds regardless of which time zone you're in. What can change is the calendar date you 'turn' a year older: if you were born at 11:30 PM in Tokyo and you fly to Los Angeles, your American friends will see you as one calendar day younger on your birthday. The seconds-alive number stays identical; only the visible date label shifts.

Why does my age look different on my birthday in another country?

Because 'today' is defined by your local clock. If you cross the international date line on your birthday, you'll experience the date twice (or skip it entirely depending on the direction). Some countries also use traditional age systems — the East Asian system makes you 1 at birth and bumps everyone up a year on Lunar New Year, so a Korean grandparent and a US calculator can disagree by up to two years.

How do I calculate my exact age?

Your exact age is the elapsed time between your date of birth and right now, decomposed into calendar units. We start with whole years (the number of complete birthdays you have had), then take the remainder and break it into whole months, then whole days, then hours, minutes, and seconds derived from the day fraction. Because months have variable lengths (28–31 days) and years occasionally have a leap day, calendar arithmetic — not simple division — is the only way to get a number that lines up with how people actually count birthdays. This page uses date-fns under the hood, which handles those edge cases correctly.

How many days have I been alive?

Total days alive is the integer number of midnights between your date of birth and today, computed in your local time. A typical lifespan in the developed world is roughly 27,000–30,000 days. Memorable thresholds along the way: 1,000 days at age 2.7, 10,000 days at 27.4, 25,000 days at 68.4, and 30,000 days at 82.2. The arithmetic behind your exact age

An age looks like a single number, but getting it right means respecting variable month lengths, leap days, and the difference between how a calendar counts and how a culture counts. These notes explain the method behind the live display above.

Age is calendar arithmetic, not division

Your age is not total days divided by 365.25. It is the count of birthdays you have actually passed. The calculation starts from your birth date, advances one whole year at a time while that anniversary is still in the past, and stops at the last birthday on or before today. The leftover span is then broken into whole months, then days. Because month lengths vary from 28 to 31 days, this stepwise method is the only way to land on the same number a person would count by hand.

Leap years and the 29 February case

A leap year adds 29 February every four years (skipping century years not divisible by 400, so 1900 was not a leap year but 2000 was). The calculator counts each real day, so a leap day inside your lifespan is included automatically. People born on 29 February — leaplings — have a birthday only once every four years; in common years most legal systems treat the birthday as falling on 28 February, which is the convention this tool follows for milestone dates.

Years, months, days — and the smaller units

The same elapsed span can be expressed many ways. Years/months/days is how people state age in conversation. Total days, total weeks, and total hours are useful for milestones and planning. Total seconds is the rawest measure — it is identical to the difference between two Unix timestamps. None of these contradict each other; they are the one duration sliced at different granularities.

Chronological age versus age next birthday

Chronological age is how many full years you have completed — what almost every form, ID, and legal system means by 'age'. 'Age next birthday' is that number plus one, the age you are about to turn, and it is used mainly by life-insurance actuaries who price a policy on the nearer integer. Confusing the two shifts every figure by a year, so this tool reports completed years and shows the countdown to the next birthday separately.

East Asian age reckoning

The traditional East Asian system counts differently: a newborn is 1 year old at birth (the in-utero year is counted), and everyone gains a year together on Lunar New Year rather than on their own birthday. Under that system a baby born the day before Lunar New Year becomes 2 the next day. South Korea legally standardised on the international 0-at-birth system in June 2023; the traditional count still appears informally across China, Korea, and Vietnam, which is why an East Asian relative's stated age can differ from this calculator by one or two years.

Time zones and the birthday you 'turn'

The elapsed time between two instants is the same number of seconds anywhere on Earth, so seconds-alive never changes with location. What can shift is the calendar date you turn a year older: 'today' is defined by your local clock. Someone born late at night in Tokyo who travels to Los Angeles may see their birthday land on the previous calendar date. The integer age is unaffected — only the visible date label moves.

Every figure on this page describes one underlying duration — the span between your date of birth and now — sliced at different granularities. Years, months, days, weeks, hours, and seconds never contradict each other; they are the same elapsed time expressed for different purposes.

Age calculation method

How we calculate this: Whole years are counted by advancing from the date of birth one anniversary at a time while that anniversary stays on or before today; the remainder is broken into whole months and then whole days, with hours, minutes, and seconds derived from the day fraction. Total days, weeks, hours, and seconds are computed directly from the elapsed millisecond span. Milestone dates project the same arithmetic forward to future birthdays and round-number thresholds.
Data sources: Calendar arithmetic uses the date-fns library for leap-year and variable-month-length handling. The Gregorian leap-year rule (every 4 years, excluding century years not divisible by 400) and the East Asian age-reckoning notes follow standard calendar references. South Korea's June 2023 move to the international system is a matter of public record.
