Dnipro is Ukraine's fourth-largest city, with about 968,000 residents stretched along a wide bend of the Dnipro (Dnieper) River roughly 390 km southeast of Kyiv. Founded by Catherine the Great in 1784 as Yekaterinoslav and renamed Dnipropetrovsk in 1926, it became Dnipro in 2016 under Ukraine's decommunisation law. For much of the Soviet era it was a closed city, anchored by the Pivdenmash (Yuzhmash) plant, which built intercontinental ballistic missiles and launch vehicles and still underpins the city's aerospace and heavy-engineering identity. During the 2014 Euromaidan revolution and the Donbas conflict that followed, Dnipro became a critical hub for volunteers, hospitals, and displaced people, a role it has continued through the full-scale war that began in 2022. The city observes Eastern European Time (EET, UTC+2) with EEST (UTC+3) in summer.
