What are Discord timestamps and why use them?

Discord timestamps are a special markdown token (<t:UNIX:STYLE>) that Discord's client renders into the viewer's local timezone. Use them for raid times, esports streams, server events, AMA announcements, deadline reminders — anything where members across continents need to see the same moment in their own time without doing the math.

Does this generator work in DMs and threads?

Yes. The Discord timestamp tag renders identically in DMs, group chats, regular text channels, threads, voice-channel chat, forum posts, and stage-channel chat. The viewer's timezone is what determines the display, regardless of where the message is posted.

What timezone is used for the rendered display?

Each Discord viewer's own device timezone is used. That's the whole point of the format — you post one tag, and a member in Tokyo sees their local time while a member in Berlin sees theirs. The timezone you select in this generator is only used for parsing the date you typed; it's not transmitted to viewers.

Can I use Discord timestamps in webhooks and bot messages?

Yes. Webhook payloads and bot messages support the <t:UNIX:STYLE> markdown identically to user messages. Pass the markdown string in the message content field and Discord renders it on each viewer's client. This is how scheduling bots and event-RSVP bots show times in every member's local zone.

Why does the relative timestamp (:R) show "in 0 seconds" sometimes?

The :R style picks the largest sensible unit (years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds) and rounds. If your selected time is within a second or two of "now", the rendered value will tick between "in 0 seconds" and "now" until you cross the next minute boundary. Discord clients refresh :R timestamps every minute or so.

Can I generate a Discord countdown timer?

Discord doesn't have a true "timer" markdown — but the :R relative style is the closest thing. It self-updates on each viewer's client and shows phrases like "in 3 hours" or "5 minutes ago", so a future date with :R behaves like a live countdown for everyone reading.
