Countdown
Portugal Legislative Election 2027
Event overview
Portugal's next regular eleições legislativas to the 230-seat Assembleia da República, due by 2027 on the four-year cycle from the May 2025 snap vote.
Portugal's next regular legislative election (eleições legislativas), expected by mid-2029 but with a working assumption of Sunday 23 May 2027 given the volatility of the post-2024 political cycle. Some 10.8 million eligible Portuguese voters at home and abroad elect all 230 deputies of the Assembleia da República using d'Hondt proportional representation across 22 constituencies including the four overseas circles.
Portugal has held three legislative elections since January 2022 — the March 2022 PS majority, the March 2024 vote that produced a fragile AD (PSD-CDS-PPM) minority under Luís Montenegro, and the May 2025 snap vote that returned AD as the largest grouping but again without majority. The Iniciativa Liberal and the right-populist Chega — which under André Ventura overtook PS to become the second-largest force in 2024 and consolidated this in 2025 — have reshaped a previously bipolar PS-versus-PSD system into a four-way contest.
Under the 1976 Constitution the Assembleia's term is four years, but the President of the Republic can dissolve Parliament and call early elections — a power exercised repeatedly through the 2020s. The exact date of the next vote depends on whether Montenegro's government completes its term or another minority collapse triggers a fourth snap election.
The 2027 campaign will weigh the cost-of-living crisis and the housing affordability emergency that has driven coastal rents and mortgage payments up sharply, immigration policy and the post-2017 surge in foreign-born residents that has become Chega's signature theme, the EU-funded post-pandemic Recovery and Resilience Plan implementation, the future of the public health service (SNS) waiting times, and corruption-related debates following the November 2023 resignation of PS premier António Costa.
The Comissão Nacional de Eleições publishes results at cne.pt; the official tabulation runs at eleicoes.cne.pt. RTP (public broadcaster), SIC and TVI anchor Portuguese-language coverage; Diário de Notícias, Público and Expresso run major print coverage. Polls close at 19:00 mainland Portugal time (WET) and at 19:00 Azores time (WET-1).
Portugal's 2027 vote sits in the Iberian and southern-European cluster with the Spanish general election and Italian general election. For comparable EU member-state cycles see the Belgium federal election and Finland parliamentary election.
When is the Portugal 2027 election? Working assumption Sunday 23 May 2027; the legal deadline is mid-2029 but post-2022 instability suggests another early vote is plausible. Who is running? AD coalition under Luís Montenegro; PS under Pedro Nuno Santos; Chega under André Ventura; Iniciativa Liberal; Livre; Bloco de Esquerda; CDU. Why does this election matter globally? Portugal is a EU and NATO member, the second-largest Lusophone economy, and the fastest-growing destination for European tech-sector immigration. Why so many snap elections? Since 2022 Portugal's d'Hondt arithmetic has not produced workable majorities; the PR-inflicted Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa have repeatedly used the dissolution power.
