Maha Shivratri 2027 — the "Great Night of Shiva" — falling on Saturday, March 6, 2027. The annual Shaivite observance brings tens of millions of pilgrims to Shiva temples for an all-night vigil of fasting, chanting, and abhishekam of the Shivling.
Maha Shivratri is observed on the 14th night of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the lunisolar Hindu month of Phalguna (or Magha in some traditions). Several traditions explain its significance: it is the night Shiva married Parvati; the night Shiva performed the Tandava cosmic dance; the night of Lingodbhava (the appearance of the cosmic Shivling); and the night Shiva drank the Halahala poison churned from the cosmic ocean to save the universe.
Unlike most Hindu festivals, Maha Shivratri is observed primarily at night. Devotees fast from sunrise on the day to sunrise the following morning, with the night divided into four prahars (three-hour watches) and a separate puja performed in each. Abhishekam of the Shivling uses milk, honey, ghee, yoghurt, water, sandalwood paste, bel leaves and fragrant oils.
The 2027 date of March 6 sits later in the calendar than the 2026 observance (February 15) because the Hindu lunisolar calendar shifts about 11 days earlier each year, and 2027 contains an intercalary month (adhik maas) that shifts the festival back by about 19 days from where it would otherwise fall.
The most-visited Maha Shivratri sites are the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, with Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain, and Somnath in Gujarat receiving the largest pilgrim numbers. Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, Nepal, hosts more than a million devotees plus tens of thousands of sadhus.
In Mauritius, where Hindus are nearly half the population, the Maha Shivratri pilgrimage to Ganga Talao crater lake is a national holiday and one of the largest Hindu pilgrimages outside India. Trinidad, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Bali and the broader Hindu diaspora all observe the festival at major Shaivite temples.
The fast is broken at dawn the next morning with prasad — typically a meal that includes thandai, kheer, fruits, and ladoo. Devotees who keep the strict nirjala fast (no water) break it carefully with small sips before any solid food.
Drik Panchang and the Hindu American Foundation publish prahar timings for cities worldwide. Doordarshan and Aastha cover the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar live. Pashupatinath in Kathmandu is live-streamed by Nepali state television. Most major Shaivite temples now stream their night-long puja on YouTube.
Maha Shivratri 2027 sits in the wider Hindu calendar alongside Maha Shivratri 2026, Hanuman Jayanti 2026, Diwali 2026 and Pongal 2026.
When is Maha Shivratri 2027? Saturday, March 6, 2027. Why is the date later than in 2026? The 2027 Hindu calendar contains an adhik maas (intercalary month) that shifts the festival back by about 19 days. How is the fast observed? From sunrise to sunrise, with the night divided into four prahars and a separate puja in each. Where are the biggest pilgrimages? Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain), Pashupatinath (Kathmandu), and Ganga Talao (Mauritius).
