Mtv Vmas 2027

What this countdown tracks

The clock above counts down to the 2027 MTV Video Music Awards in September 2027, MTV's signature pop-music awards and performance broadcast, expected to return to UBS Arena in Elmont, New York with a CBS/MTV simulcast.

About this event

The MTV VMAs are the most-watched music video awards ceremony in the US and the show that, more than any other, drives the September pop-culture conversation. Created in 1984, the VMAs have evolved across multiple eras: the original cable-era event, the late-90s pop-spectacle peak, the 2000s viral-moment factory, and the current CBS/MTV simulcast era launched in 2024 that significantly expanded the show's reach beyond Paramount cable.

Eligibility for the 2027 VMAs runs roughly August 2026 to August 2027. The show is built around the Moonman trophies (the iconic astronaut-with-flag statuette) for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and a deep set of genre and craft categories. Performances historically generate more cultural impact than the wins themselves. The Vanguard lifetime-achievement honor and the Tribute and Icon presentations anchor the night's prestige beats.

What to expect

Nominees and the performer lineup are typically announced by MTV in early August 2027. Expected frontrunners depend on the 2026-27 release cycle, but include returning chart leaders Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, and any breakout 2027 acts. Per VMA practice, expect a Vanguard Award presentation, a tribute segment connected to a major artist or moment from the year, surprise-collaboration performances, and at least one genuinely viral acceptance speech moment that drives the next morning's news cycle.
