Bodhi Day 2026 — the Mahayana Buddhist commemoration of the Buddha's enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya — falling on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. Observed across the Japanese, Korean, Chinese (in Mahayana traditions), Vietnamese, and Tibetan Buddhist worlds.
Bodhi Day (Japanese: Rohatsu; Chinese: Laba; Vietnamese: Lễ Phật Thành Đạo) commemorates the moment Siddhartha Gautama, after seven years of meditation and the abandonment of asceticism, achieved bodhi — full awakening — under the bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya in northern India. The traditional date in Mahayana Buddhism is the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, which generally falls in early December (December 8 by the standard fixed-calendar convention used in Japanese Buddhism, or by the corresponding lunar date in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese traditions).
This is one of the three major Buddha-event commemorations alongside Vesak (which celebrates the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana on the same day in Theravada tradition) and Buddha's parinirvana day. Mahayana traditions split the three events across separate dates, while Theravada traditions observe them all on the May full moon.
The Buddha's enlightenment under the Bodhi tree is the foundational event of Buddhism. The Pali and Sanskrit accounts describe how, after sitting in meditation through the night, Siddhartha encountered Mara (the personification of delusion and craving), withstood his attacks, and at dawn realized the Four Noble Truths and the path to liberation. Sites of the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya — including the Mahabodhi Temple and the descendant of the original tree — remain the world's most-visited Buddhist pilgrimage site.
In Japan, Rohatsu is the climax of the most intense meditation period of the Zen calendar. Rohatsu sesshin — a seven-day, almost-non-stop sitting retreat from December 1 through December 8 — is held at major Zen monasteries (Eihei-ji, Sōji-ji, Daitoku-ji, Myōshin-ji, and the Rinzai monasteries of Kyoto) and at Zen centres worldwide. The retreats end at dawn on December 8 with the recitation of the Heart Sutra and a chanting service. The eight-day sesshin is considered the highest-discipline Zen training period, and many monks and lay practitioners undertake it as the spiritual high point of their year.
In China, the day is observed as Laba Festival, with the famous Laba congee — a savoury or sweet rice porridge with eight "treasures" (red beans, rice, dried fruits, peanuts, pine nuts, jujubes, lotus seeds, and other ingredients varying by region) — distributed at temples to thousands of visitors. The Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou and the Yonghe (Lama) Temple in Beijing are particularly known for their Laba distributions, which today serve hundreds of thousands of bowls in coordinated city-wide programmes.
In Korea, the day is observed as part of the Mahayana calendar with temple visits, meditation, and the lighting of lanterns. In Vietnam, Buddhist temples organise community programmes. Tibetan Buddhism observes the Buddha's enlightenment on Saka Dawa Düchen (in May/June, similar to Vesak) rather than on December 8, but Bodhi Day is increasingly observed alongside.
Major Zen monasteries (Eihei-ji, Sōji-ji, San Francisco Zen Center, Plum Village in France) publish Rohatsu sesshin schedules. The Mahabodhi Temple Society in Bodh Gaya hosts coordinated international Bodhi Day programmes. The Yonghe Temple in Beijing and Lingyin in Hangzhou broadcast Laba distributions on Chinese state TV. Diaspora Buddhist temples in the US, UK, Australia, France, and Germany organise community programmes.
Bodhi Day 2026 sits in the broader Buddhist calendar with Vesak (the Theravada equivalent in May) and is a counterpart to Mahavir Jayanti 2026 on the broader Indic calendar. See also Christmas 2026 — the two festivals fall in the same December window.
