Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026
Event overview
126-seat Assam Vidhan Sabha election; BJP-led NDA seeks third consecutive term; counting May 4, 2026.
The clock above counts down to the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election, which will pick the 16th Legislative Assembly of Assam through 126 single-member constituencies. Polling is expected to open in early April with counting on May 4, 2026, alongside Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry. The BJP-led NDA seeks a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Assam's Vidhan Sabha is elected for a five-year term using first-past-the-post in 126 constituencies, of which 8 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 9 for Scheduled Castes. The Election Commission of India administers the vote, and the term of the current 15th Assembly ends on May 21, 2026. With the post-2023 delimitation already implemented, 2026 is the first election under the redrawn map that consolidated several Barak Valley and BTAD seats.
The political backdrop: the BJP swept 2016 and 2021 with Sarbananda Sonowal and then Sarma at the helm, ending a decade and a half of Tarun Gogoi-led Congress rule. The 2024 Lok Sabha results showed BJP retaining its dominant position but with regional churn around the AIUDF and a reorganized Congress under Gaurav Gogoi. The election will test the BJP's post-CAA implementation politics in a state where citizenship and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) remain raw issues.
The campaign will focus on the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and ongoing NRC litigation, the Assam-Meghalaya and Assam-Mizoram border deals, flood and erosion management on the Brahmaputra, the Assam Accord's pending Clause 6 recommendations, and infrastructure investments tied to the Act-East corridor. Tea-garden welfare, Bodo accord implementation, and the future of BTC governance will also feature.
Results publish on results.eci.gov.in. Domestic broadcasters NDTV, Times Now, Republic, and regional channels Pratidin Time, News18 Assam, and DY365 run live coverage; print coverage in The Assam Tribune and the Sentinel. The hashtag #AssamElection2026 is standard on national feeds.
Pair this with the simultaneous south-east cluster: Tamil Nadu Assembly 2026, Kerala Assembly 2026, West Bengal counting day 2026, and the next big northern test in Uttar Pradesh Assembly 2027.
When is the Assam 2026 election? Polling expected in early April 2026; counting day is May 4, 2026. Where does it happen? Across all 126 constituencies of Assam, organized into multiple polling phases by the ECI. Why does this election matter? It is the third consecutive electoral test for the BJP in Assam and the first vote since CAA implementation began in 2024. Who is the incumbent Chief Minister? Himanta Biswa Sarma, since May 10, 2021.
