NATO Ankara Summit
Event overview
77th NATO summit in Ankara (Jul 7–8, 2026), the first NATO summit hosted by Turkey.
The 35th NATO Summit, scheduled for Tuesday 7 July and Wednesday 8 July 2026 at the Beştepe complex in Ankara, Türkiye. The summit gathers the 32 heads of state and government of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (and prospective accession partners), with the Secretary General and the Chair of the Military Committee, to set Alliance posture, defence-spending targets, and the next iteration of strategic guidance.
NATO Leaders' Meetings have been held annually since the Wales 2014 summit responded to Russia's annexation of Crimea, with major decisions also taken in Warsaw 2016, Brussels 2018 and 2021, Madrid 2022, Vilnius 2023, Washington 2024 and The Hague 2025. The Ankara meeting is the first NATO summit hosted by Türkiye, a NATO member since 1952, and lands in the year that the Alliance is implementing the Defence Investment Pledge raised to "at least 5% of GDP by 2035" agreed at The Hague in June 2025. It is also the first summit since the 2024 readmission and full integration of Sweden and Finland under the post-2022 enlargement.
The Ankara venue at Beştepe — the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Külliyesi — places the summit at the centre of Türkiye's political and security apparatus and underlines President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's bid to position Ankara as an indispensable bridge between Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte hosts; the Military Committee chair frames the operational annexes. Russia, the war in Ukraine, NATO's posture toward China, the Middle East post-Gaza picture, the Alliance's role in the Black Sea, and the Indo-Pacific Four (Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand) partnership programme will dominate the agenda.
Watch the language of the communiqué on Ukraine's "irreversible path" toward NATO membership; the implementation pathway for the 2025 Defence Investment Pledge (3.5 percent core defence plus 1.5 percent broader security); the future of the Black Sea Patrol and Mediterranean missions; updated Force Model and Regional Plans signed in Vilnius 2023; the Defence Industrial Pledge on accelerated production; and the Alliance's response to grey-zone activity and undersea infrastructure. Türkiye is expected to emphasise its F-35 reintegration, KAAN fighter programme, and a possible elevated role in NATO Mission Iraq and the Mediterranean Maritime Group.
The official site is nato.int with live press streams, declarations and read-outs. The Turkish Presidency runs a parallel ankara2026 portal in Turkish, English and French. NATO TV publishes b-roll and the family photo; Reuters, AP, AFP, BBC, ARD, France 24, NHK and Anadolu Agency anchor mainstream coverage. Communiqué text is released at the close of the leaders' meeting; bilateral readouts trickle through the night. The Defence Ministers' meeting in February 2026 in Brussels and the spring 2026 informal foreign ministers' meeting set up the leaders' deliverables.
Pair the NATO summit with the G7 in Évian and the G20 in Miami, plus the BRICS summit in New Delhi for the global leadership calendar. Türkiye's hosting profile peaks with COP31 in Antalya later in 2026.
When is the NATO Ankara summit? Tuesday 7 July and Wednesday 8 July 2026. Where is it held? The Beştepe complex (Cumhurbaşkanlığı Külliyesi) in Ankara, Türkiye — the first Turkish-hosted NATO summit. Why does the 2026 NATO summit matter? It is the implementation summit for the 5% of GDP defence pledge and the first major leaders' meeting fully integrating Sweden and Finland. How many member states attend? 32, plus invited partners and the Indo-Pacific Four (Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand) and the EU.
