This countdown follows the build-up to the Indian Premier League 2027, the 20th season of the world's most-watched T20 franchise league. It covers the league window confirmed by the BCCI, the ten participating franchises and the road from the opener at Chepauk to the final at Eden Gardens.
IPL 2027 is scheduled to run from 14 March to 30 May 2027, an 11-week window that lands the BCCI's preferred March–May slot before the monsoon rolls into India's eastern grounds. The 20th edition retains the structure that has held since the 2022 expansion: ten franchises, 74 matches, a double round-robin distorted by home-and-away pairings rather than a flat schedule, and a four-team playoff that closes with Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the final. Knockout games for 2027 are scheduled for the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the two venues the BCCI has historically rotated for showpiece nights.
The league enters 2027 with a defending champion crowned at the close of IPL 2026 and a fresh mega-auction cycle reshaping squads. Auctions ahead of 2027 are expected to bring smaller adjustments rather than a full reset, with retained cores and modest top-up purchases. The competing franchises remain Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
Broadcast rights for the 2023–2027 cycle were split between Disney Star (linear television) and Viacom18 / JioCinema (digital), and IPL 2027 will be the final year of that arrangement before the next rights tender. The schedule also threads around international windows: ICC's Men's World Cup follows in October–November 2027, so IPL form in May feeds directly into national selectors' planning for the 50-over event in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
IPL 2027 is the bridge between two cycles. It is the last edition under the existing media-rights deal, the final IPL before the next ODI World Cup, and a 20th anniversary year that the BCCI is expected to mark with curated programming. For franchises, it is also the tail end of a retention cycle in which the squads built around the 2025 mega-auction have one more season to convert into silverware before the next reset. Sponsorship inventory and on-ground experiences will likely be more elaborate than usual to underline the milestone edition.
