What this countdown tracks

Akshaya Tritiya 2026 — the "never-diminishing" third lunar day of the Hindu month of Vaishakha — falling on Sunday, April 19, 2026. India's biggest gold-buying day of the year and a marker for new ventures, weddings, and major purchases.

About this festival

Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi (lunar day) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Vaishakha, in the Hindu lunisolar calendar. The Sanskrit name akshaya means "never-decreasing" or "imperishable" — the day is believed to be a tithi on which any auspicious activity, donation or purchase yields ever-growing returns. It is one of the few days in the Hindu calendar that does not require an additional muhurat (auspicious sub-time) — the entire day is considered auspicious.

Several traditions converge on Akshaya Tritiya. It is the birthday of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. It is the day Ved Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha. It is the day the descent of the Ganges is celebrated on Earth. And it is the day Sudama brought a humble offering of poha (flattened rice) to Krishna and was rewarded with limitless wealth.

In Jainism, Akshaya Tritiya marks the end of Lord Rishabhdev's year-long fast — broken with sugarcane juice — and is observed with parana (fast-breaking) ceremonies by devout Jains.

How it's observed

The dominant cultural observance of Akshaya Tritiya is gold-buying. Indian jewellers — especially Tanishq, Kalyan, Malabar Gold, and the network of independent kerala-style jewellers — see their largest single-day sales of the year, often higher than Diwali. Industry estimates put the day's gold sales at 20–30 tonnes nationally. Gold prices typically peak in the days leading up. Silver utensils, copper vessels, real estate registrations and new vehicle purchases also see strong sales spikes.

Devotional observance on the day includes a morning bath in a holy river or a symbolic ablution at home; reading or chanting from Vishnu Sahasranama or the Bhagavad Gita; feeding Brahmins and the poor; and donating food, water, fans, umbrellas, sandalwood paste and clothing — items associated with the hot Vaishakha summer. Many households perform Lakshmi puja in the evening.

Major weddings are scheduled on Akshaya Tritiya across India because the day requires no additional muhurat. The Char Dham Yatra in the Garhwal Himalayas — to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — formally opens on Akshaya Tritiya, with the doors of the high-altitude shrines reopened after the winter closure.

The Char Dham Yatra opening dates are announced by the Uttarakhand government in late winter. Indian financial press (Mint, Economic Times, Moneycontrol) cover gold-price trends in detail leading up to the day.
