Countdown
Google I/O 2026
Event overview
Latest Gemini model updates, AI features across Search, Workspace, Cloud, and Android. Android 17 developer preview, new Pixel/Wear OS features, AI Studio and Gemini API updates.
This countdown runs to the opening keynote of Google I/O 2026, confirmed for Tuesday, May 19 at 10:00 PT at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, with a second day of developer sessions on May 20.
Google I/O is the company's annual developer conference and its principal venue for setting AI, Android, Chrome, Cloud, and Pixel direction for the coming year. The event has been anchored at the Shoreline Amphitheatre adjacent to Google's headquarters since 2016, with a hybrid in-person and online format since 2022. The opening keynote is fronted by CEO Sundar Pichai and features executives from Search, DeepMind, Android, Cloud, and Workspace, while the more technical Developer Keynote that follows targets engineers building on Google's platforms.
I/O draws an audience of roughly 5,000 in-person attendees plus a global online viewership in the millions. The two-day programme runs more than 200 sessions covering Gemini, Android, AI Studio, Firebase, Wear OS, Chrome DevTools, Google Cloud, and Workspace. Codelabs and sandbox demos open for in-person attendees, and recorded sessions publish to the I/O site within hours.
The 2026 edition is widely expected to centre on Gemini's next major release, including model updates across Pro, Flash, and on-device Nano tiers. Continued AI integration in Search via AI Mode, Workspace Gemini features, and Cloud's Vertex AI is likely. Android 17's developer preview and behavioural changes should land at I/O along with Pixel feature drops, Wear OS updates, and new AI Studio and Gemini API capabilities. New Project Astra demos, expanded Veo and Imagen models, and updates to NotebookLM and Project Mariner agentic browsing are plausible.
The keynote streams free on io.google, Google Developers' YouTube channel, and Android Developers' YouTube channel. A 10:00 PT start equals 13:00 ET, 18:00 BST, 19:00 CEST, 22:30 IST, and 02:00 JST on May 20. The opening keynote runs roughly two hours and is followed by the Developer Keynote in the same afternoon. Sessions are pre-published to the I/O website with searchable filters by track, and I/O Connect regional events run later in the year.
I/O sits roughly two weeks before Microsoft Build 2026, Apple WWDC 2026, and Google's own Made by Google Pixel 11 launch in August. For Google's broader annual cadence, see the Google keynote hub.
