Telangana Assembly Election 2028
Event overview
Election to the 119-seat Telangana Legislative Assembly, due by December 2028 on the five-year cycle from the November 2023 vote that returned Congress under Revanth Reddy.
The election to the 119-seat Telangana Legislative Assembly (Telangana Vidhan Sabha), expected by December 2028 on the five-year cycle from the 30 November 2023 polling. Some 33 million eligible voters in India's tenth-most-populous state — carved out of Andhra Pradesh in June 2014 — elect their MLAs and, indirectly, the Chief Minister of the state's third post-formation government.
The 2023 vote ended a decade of K. Chandrashekar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS, formerly TRS) rule when the Indian National Congress under Anumula Revanth Reddy swept to power with 64 seats on a 39.4 percent vote share. BRS collapsed to 39 seats and the BJP won 8 — its best Telangana performance since the state's formation. The AIMIM held its traditional 7 seats in old Hyderabad city.
Telangana's politics have realigned along three poles: the incumbent Congress under Revanth Reddy, the BRS family operation under KCR and his son K. T. Rama Rao, and an ascendant BJP that won 4 of 17 Lok Sabha seats in June 2024. The AIMIM under Asaduddin Owaisi remains the dominant Muslim-vote anchor in central Hyderabad. The Telangana Public Service Commission paper leak controversy, the Hydra anti-encroachment drive in Hyderabad, and the Musi River rejuvenation project have framed Reddy's first term.
The 2028 campaign will weigh the Congress government's six guarantees programme implementation — particularly the rythu bharosa farm-income support and the gruha jyothi 200-unit free electricity scheme — the financial cost of the bifurcation-era assets dispute with Andhra Pradesh, the future of Hyderabad as a global IT hub against Bengaluru competition, irrigation and the Kaleshwaram project audit, and Telangana identity politics versus the BJP's Hindi-belt-style messaging.
The Election Commission of India and the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer publish constituency-level results at results.eci.gov.in and ceotelangana.nic.in. ETV Telugu, TV9 Telugu, Sakshi TV and NTV run dominant Telugu coverage; The Hindu, Deccan Chronicle and Telangana Today run major English print coverage. Polls open 07:00 to 18:00 IST.
Telangana's 2028 vote sits with the wave of late-2028 Indian state elections — the Madhya Pradesh assembly election, Rajasthan assembly election and Chhattisgarh assembly election. For neighbouring-state context see the Karnataka assembly election.
When is the Telangana 2028 election? Expected November or early December 2028, on the five-year cycle from the 30 November 2023 vote. Who is running? Congress under Revanth Reddy defending; BRS under K. T. Rama Rao; BJP through G. Kishan Reddy and the state unit; AIMIM under Asaduddin Owaisi in Hyderabad seats. Why does this election matter beyond India? Hyderabad is one of India's two largest IT and pharma export hubs (Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Genome Valley); Telangana's policies on data-centre power and water shape global capex decisions. What happens to BRS after the 2024 Lok Sabha wipeout? A live question — KCR's party won zero Lok Sabha seats in 2024 after holding nine in 2019, and the 2028 vote is its fight for survival.
